9p in the IBA

Vor ein paar Tagen traf sich der Fanclub von Diana Koszegi, einer ungarischen Profispielern 1p, in der IBA.

A few days ago the fanclub of Diana Koszegi, Hungarian professional player 1p, held a meeting in the IBA.

Unter zahlreichen Amateurspielern befand sich auch ein 9dan Profispieler: Kim Sung Jun. (links im unterem Bild)

Beside numerous amateur players there was also a 9dan professional player: Kim Sung Jun. (left in the picture below.)

Die beiden Profis spielten abwechselnd Simultanpartien gegen die Amateurspieler.

Both pro-players played against the amateurs simultaneously.

Hier spiele ich (schwarz) gerade gegen Matt (weiss).

Der Spieler in der Mitte ist Kim Jung Hyeop, ein sehr starker Spieler. Er ist ein ehemaliger Yonguseng (koranischer Insei, was bedeutet, dass er auf einer Schule war fuer angehende Profis). Demnaechst fliegt er nach Belgien um dort Go zu lehren und anschliessend nimmt er am EM Go Kongress in Schweden teil.

The player in the middle is Kim Jung Hyeop, a very strong player. He is a former yonguseng (Korean insei, which means, he attended a certain go school and tried to become a professional player), he will fly to Belgium in order to teach Go and later on he will visit the European Go Congress in Sweden.

Ich spielte auch gegen Diana eine Blitzpartie. Dannach sagte sie, dass sie von einigen meiner Zuege sehr ueberrascht war (im positivem Sinne) 😀

I also played a lightning game against Diana. After the game she said, that she was very surprised by some of my moves (in a positive way). 😀

Nicht mehr lange und ich habe das Go-Problembuch komplett geloest. Das muessten nun schon ueber 500 Tsumego / Go-Probleme sein!

It won’t be long until I have solved the whole Go-problem book. More than 500 tsumego / go-problems so far! 

Die ersten zwei Probleme sind mit Absicht relativ einfach gehalten. Das dritte Problem ist schon etwas schwieriger, aber sehr interessant.

For the first two problems I picked easy ones on purpose. The third one is a bit more difficult, but very interesting.

adventures in Korea

Habe schon lange nichts mehr geschrieben, deshalb wird es mal wieder Zeit, dass ich euch auf den neusten Stand bringe.

Javier, der seit kurzem angereiste Finne, lebt sich hier so langsam ein, obwohl mit ihm die Wahl des Restaurants etwas umstaendlich ist. (Z.B. mag er kein Schweinefleisch und kein scharfes Essen. Das schränkt die koreanische Küche doch etwas ein.)

Vor ein paar Tagen waren Professor Lee Ki-bong, Alexa, Javier und ich in Lotte World. Lotte ist eine der groessten Konzerne in Korea. Davon gibt es auch Fast-Food-Ketten und etliche Getraenke.

Lotte World ist ein Mix aus Kaufhaus und Disneyland.

(Ja, man kann ich Kaufhaus tatsächlich mit einer Wildwasserbahn fahren. xD haha)

Innerhalb von Lotte World war auch ein „Korean Folk Museum“, welches mit vielen Puppen und Miniaturlandshaften die Geschichte Koreas behandelte. Von der Steinzeit (!) bis zum 20. Jahrhundert.

Dieser Besuch hat meiner Kamera viel Speicherplatz und viele Batterien gekostet.

Habe gestern auch mal endlich einer der deutschen Studenten an der Myongji Universitaet kennengelernt. Louis Hacker ist bestimmt manchen von euch ein Begriff, wenn ich mich nicht taeusche hat der Spiegel sogar von ihm berichtet (http://www.spiegel.de/unispiegel/wunderbar/0,1518,528195,00.html). Unser erstes Ligaspiel gegen ihm konnte ich mit 2 Steinen Vorgabe gewinnen. Ansonsten ist es auch mal wieder angenehm deutsch zu sprechen.

Zu den haeufig gestellten Fragen:

– In der IBA sprechen wir englisch.

– Mein Koreanisch ist sehr minimalistisch.

– Und die Zeitdifferenz zu Deutschland betraegt +7 Stunden. (Ist es in Deutschland 13:00, dann ist es hier 20:00)

Nun noch ein kleiner Nachtrag zur Geburtstagsfeier von Professor Lee Ki-bong.

Es war ein sehr feucht-froehlicher Abend, typisch koreanisch. 🙂

As I haven’t post anything in the last time, I will post a new article to keep you up-to-date.

Javier, who arrived recently, settles down slowly in Korea. He also gets used to Korean food. A few days ago Professor Lee Ki-Bong, Alexa, Javier and me visited Lotte World. Lotte is one of the biggest corporations in Korea. There are also fast-food chains and drinks, which belong to this brand.

Lotte World is a mix of a department store and Disney-Land.

(Yes, you can take a white-water ride, right in the same building of the department store. xD haha)

Inside Lotte World you can visit the „Korean Folk Museum“, which shows you the Korean history from the stone age through to the 20th century.

This trip was pretty intense for my camera, it ate lots of storage space and batteries.

Yesterday i finally met one of the German students of the Myongji university. Louis Hacker, maybe someone of you already knows him. „Spiegel Online“ reported about him (http://www.spiegel.de/unispiegel/wunderbar/0,1518,528195,00.html). I won our first league game with 2 stones handicap. Apart from that it is also nice to speak some German again.

To answer the frequently asked questions:

– We speak English at the IBA

– I cannot speak Korean, just a little bit.

– The Time difference compared to Germany is +7 hours. (If it is in Germany 13:00, it is 20:00 in Korea)

Now a small addition to Professor’s birthday party.

Haha, immer wieder spassig eure Kommentare zu lesen. 🙂

Heute gibts: Sambab.

Bei Sambab werden Scheiben von Fleisch erst in eine Art Marinade getunkt und dann auf einer heissen Platte gegrillt. Dannach nimmt man ein Salatblatt (das Angebot davon ist gross), gibt etwas Reis und ein Stück Fleisch in die Mitte und wickelt es zusammen. Schmeckt sehr gut, ist jedoch eines der teuren Gerichte.

Wie man sieht, gibt es noch viele andere Nebengerichte, womit man bei Belieben sein Sambab verfeinern kann.

Let’s talk about: Sambab

You dip slices of meat in some kind of marinade and put that on a hot plate.

After that, you take a salad leaf, put rice and meat on the middle and wrap it. It tastes pretty good, however it is one of the more expensive dishes in Korea.

As you can see, there are several side dishes, which you can use to refine the taste of your sambab.

Die Zeit vergeht hier rasend schnell.

Im Moment opfere ich etwas Zeit um euch meinen aktuellen Alltag und die IBA vorzustellen.

Ich wohne mit Alexa, einer sehr netten Ungarin, in einer bescheidenen Unterkunft. 🙂 Klein, nicht unbedingt luxuriős, aber funktional optimal. Vielleicht werd ich davon auch mal ein paar Fotos posten. Koreanische „Betten“ muss ich euch unbedingt mal zeigen und auch die Duschen! haha… Heute wird űbrigens ein neuer Schűler ankommen und ebenfalls hier wohnen.

Um circa 11 Uhr machen wir uns morgens auf den Weg zur IBA. Nach 5 Minuten und im 5. Stock sind wir am Ziel. 🙂

Die International Baduk Academy.

Baduk ist űbrigens das koreanische Wort fűr Go. 🙂

Auf der IBA sind unter der Woche vier reguläre Spieler: Alexa, Matt (USA), Tony (Kanada) und ich.

Go Studenten aus der Myongji Universität kommen meistens am Wochenende.

Dort lősen wir Go Probleme, spielen Partien, machen Lehrpartien usw.

Zur Veranschaulichung: Daran sitze ich, schwarz am Zug. 🙂

Die Probleme sind lősbar, aber nicht so einfach und auch manchmal ziemlich tricky. 150 Probleme hab ich bis jetzt geknackt.

Etwas komisch ist jedoch schon…

dass auf dem Cover Kinder abgebildet sind. 😉

Dort sind wir dann bis ca. 11-12 Uhr. Dazwischen gehen wir natűrlich Essen und ab und zu wird auch etwas Billiard oder Tischtennis gespielt. 🙂 Professor Lee Ki-bong ist nicht nur gut in Go, sondern auch ein Ass im Tischtennis.

In der IBA gibt es auch eine Liga. Heute habe ich zwei Liga-Partien gespielt. Gegen Tony (1kyu) habe ich sehr unglűcklich verloren. Der Sieg war mehr als in greifbarer Nähe…

Mit 4 Steinen Vorgabe habe ich gegen Alexa (3dan) gespielt und nach einem „nervenzerfetzenden“ ( 😉 ) Spiel gewonnen.

Heute ist ausserdem noch eine Geburtstagsfeier von Professor Lee Ki-bong. Da werden viele Leute kommen und ein paar werden auch hier in der Unterkunft schlafen, das wird dann wohl ziemlich voll hier, aber mit Sicherheit spassig!

Time really flies here.

Now I will tell you more about my everyday life and the IBA.

I am living with Alexa, a very nice person from Hungary, in a plain and simple accommodation. It’s small, not really luxurious, but in fulfilling it’s function, it’s perfect. Maybe I am going to post some pictures of the accomodation. However, I have to show you Korean „beds“ and the showers. haha… Today a new student will arrive, who also will sleep at the accommodation.

Usually at 11:00 am we are going to the IBA, after 5 minutes and on the fifth floor we arrived at our destination: the International Baduk Academy.

Baduk is the Korean term for Go.

At the IBA there are currently four regular students: Alexa, Matt (USA), Tony (Canada), and me.

Go students from the Myongji university are visting us on weekends.

Than we solve problems, play games, do teaching games and so on.

As a way of visualisation: Here a problem, it’s black’s turn.

The problems are solveable, however not that easy and sometimes pretty tricky.

I solved about 150 so far.

It’s a bit strange,

… that there are kids on the cover of the book.

That’s where we stay until 11:00 or 12:00 pm. Of course in between we are going to eat and sometimes we play some billiard or tabletennis. 🙂 Professor Lee Ki-bong is not only good at Go, but also an ace on tabletennis.

There is also a league at the IBA. Today I played two league games. I lost pretty unfortunately against Tony (1kyu). I could have won it…

I played against Alexa (3dan) with 4 handicap stones, and after some tough battles I won.

There will be a birthday party for Professor Lee Ki-bong. Lots of people will come and also some will sleep at our accommodation. It will get pretty crowded, but definitley funny.

So, endlich mal ein Post űber koreanische Essen.

Das ist im Moment mein Lieblingsessen in Korea.

Gimbab, eine Art koreanisches Sushi, obwohl darin nicht unbedingt Fisch sein muss. Man kann diverse Arten von Gimbab bestellen, die Basisfűllung besteht aus Geműse und natűrlich Reis (Bab). Im Vergleich zu Maki-Sushi viel interessanter im Geschmack. In diesen hier ist noch Thunfisch.

Es ist űblich in Korea, das neben dem Hauptgericht es noch viele Schalen mit diversen Nebengerichten angeboten werden. Umsonst. Somit ist der Tisch immer ziemlich befűllt.

Gimbab ist auch das gűnstigste Gericht. Es kostet je nach Fűllung um die 15000-3000 Won, was ~1-2 Euro entspricht.

So, finally a post about Korean food.

This is my favorite dish at the moment.

Gimbab, it’s like Korean Sushi, although the inside doesn’t have to be fish. You can order different kinds of Gimbab, the custom filling is composed of vegetables and, of course, rice (bab). Gimbab is more interesting in flavor than common Japanese Maki-Sushi, in my opinion. The addition fill of this one is tuna.

Usually if you order food in Korea, they provide many other bowls of side-dishes, for free! The table is always very filled.

Gimbab is also the cheapest dish in Korea. It depends on the filling, but it costs about 1500-3000 Won, which is about ~1-2 Euro.

I’m there!

So, endlich komme ich dazu, mal wieder etwas zu posten. Hier passiert so viel und die Zeit vergeht viel schneller als in Deutschland.

Die Anreise war sehr angenehm, ohne Probleme checkte ich an Board des Fluges LH712, Frankfurt – Seoul, ein.

10:30 Std dauerte der Flug, was aber kein grosses Problem war, denn ich sass neben Min. Min ist ein sehr netter, junger Koreaner, welcher fasziniert von Deutschland ist, und auch versucht Deutsch zu lernen (mit Erfolg!). Es war ein ziemlicher Glűcksfall, das wir nebeneinander sassen. Wir konnten uns kulturell austauschen und die Zeit verging buchstäblich wie im Flug. (Grűsse an Min!)

An Board hatte jeder einen kleinen Monitor vor sich, mit welchem man Filme und Live-Konzerte anschauen konnte. Leider konnte man nicht den neuen Indiana Jones anschauen, stattdessen sah ich „Das Beste kommt zum Schluss“ und „Horton hőrt ein Hu“. Somit war es nicht so schlimm, das ich während des Fluges nicht einschlafen konnte.

Im Flugzeug gab es Kimchi, ich war ziemlich gespannt wie der in Korea so berűhmte Kimchi wohl schmecken wűrde -> ganz interessant! Muss mich zwar noch etwas daran gewőhnen, aber das wird schnell passieren, denn in Korea gibt es zu ziemlich jedem Essen Kimchi.

Korea vom Flugzeug aus betrachtet ist einmalig! Als man durch die Wolken sehen konnte, sieht man das Korea viele Inseln hat und es dennoch recht gebirgig ist. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt konnte ich es kaum erwarten anzukommen 🙂

Am Flughafen in Seoul lief auch alles reibungslos, wobei ich an dieser Stelle mich auch nochmal bei Min bedanken muss. (Danke Min)

So finally I am able to write a new post! Many events are happening here and time flies.

The arrival went very smoothly.
Without any problems I checked into the flight LH 712, Frankfurt to Seoul!

The flight did take 10:30 hours. This was no problem at all, because I was sitting next to Min! Min is very nice and young Korean man, who is quite fascinated about Germany and is actually learning German. (With success, in my opinion!) It was a cast of fortune, that we were sitting next to each other. We did some kind of „cultural exchange“, he told me some interesting things about Korea and helped me to improve my Korean, and vice versa. The time literally flew! 🙂

On board everyone has a small monitor, on which you are able to watch movies, live concerts and so on. Unfortunately, the new Indiana Jones movie was not available. However i saw „The bucket list“ and „Dr. Seuss’s Horton hears a who“; so it was no problem that I could not sleep on board.

They had kimchi on board, I was quite curious, how it would taste. Kimchi is very popular in Korea. And it tasted very interesting! I still have to get used to it, but this will happen soon, as they serve kimchi to almost every dish.

Korea looks impressive from high above. When we were able to see through the clouds, you saw that Korea has many island and is still mountainous. I got very impatient, and could not wait to arrive in Korea.

In the airport in Seoul everything went well, I wanted to thank Min for that. (Thanks Min)
