Time is over.

Die Reise ist nun vorbei schon seit ca. einem Monat vorbei. In Kürze beginnt mein Studium.

Nun kann ich sagen, dass die Entscheidung nach Korea zu gehen, die richtige war. Ich habe viele schöne Erfahrungen gemacht, neue Eindrücke erlebt, eine andere Kultur kennengelernt, neue Freunde gefunden.

Zum Schluss möchte ich mich noch bei allen Bedanken; dem Bayerischen Go Verein, welcher mich hilfsbereit unterstützte, die Internation Baduk Academy von Professor Lee Ki Bong, den neuen Freunden und auch euch Lesern. 🙂

The time in Korea is over for me (since a month). Soon university will start.

After all i can say, it was the right decision to go to Korea. I have seen a lot of new things, made new friends, good memories.

In the end I want to say thank you to: the Bavarian Go Club, which supported me; the International Baduk Academy of Professor Lee Ki Bong… the new friends… and after all to the readers of my blog!

Buddhist Temple

Was waere eine Asienreise ohne den Besuch eines buddhistischen Tempels?

You cannot call a journey an Asian journey, if you have not visited a Buddhist temple, can you?

Vor ca. einer Woche war ich mit Jens Henker, einem deutschen Studenten an der Myongji Universitaet, in Samseung.

Als erstes gingen wir zum COEX Centers, dem groessten Einkaufszentrums Suedkoreas. Wie man annehmen kann, ist es riesig, aber leider auch sehr schlecht ausgeschildert. Wir waren teilweise etwas verloren. 🙂 Interessanterweise fanden wir dannach gleich in der Naehe einen buddhistischen Tempel.

About a week ago I met Jens Henker, a German student of the Myongji university, in Samseung.

First we went to the COEX Center, which is the biggest department store in South Korea. As you can assume it is huge, however it is not very good signposted. We were almost lost. 🙂 After that we found a buddhist temple.

Ja, so langsam geht meine Reise zu ende. Nur noch 6 Tage.

In letzter Zeit gehe ich vorallem Sightseeing und mir fehlt die Zeit den Blog auf den neusten Stand zu halten, aber ich werde mich bemuehen in den naechsten Tagen noch ein paar Posts zu machen. 🙂

First Dan!

Ich bin nun erster Dan! 😀 (Schon seit dem fuenftem August) Ja, beim Kampfsport bedeutet das: Schwarzgurt-traeger.

Ah, I almost forgot to tell you:

I am „First Dan“! 😀 (since the fifth of August) In martial arts someone who has the first dan wears a black belt.

Hurray! 🙂 Das muss dieses Wochenende gefeiert werden. Let’s do party this weekend!

Jeonju, yahoo!

Vor kurzem ware ich mit Min und SaeByul in Jeonju.

Jeonju ist ein gutes Stueck von Seoul entfernt. Wir fuhren mit dem Auto und ich hatte genug Zeit um auf dem Weg dorthin die Landschaft Suedkoreas zu geniessen. Wenn man nicht Hochhaeuser und Appartments sieht, ist Korea sehr gruen und hat viele Berge.

Recently Min, SaeByul and me were in Jeonju.

Jeonju is far apart from Seoul.  So I had enough time to enjoy the landscape of South Korea, while we drove by car. If you don’t see skyscrapers and appartment buildings, Korea offers a beautiful view. Green and so many mountains.

Jeonju war das geistliche Zentrum in den Joseon Dynastie.

Jeonju was the spiritual capital in the Joseon dynasty.

Die Bilder moegen vielleicht ruhig wirken, aber die Zikaden waren extrem laut. Nicht zu vergleichen mit europaeischen Grillen.

The pictures lie, it was not quiet at all. The cicada were extremly noisy. Korean cicada are no match for European crickets.

In the Hankuk Kiwon

Konnte leider nicht frueher was schreiben, ich hatte eine Erkaeltung. Ja wirklich, es sind hier ueber 30 Grad und ich bekomm eine Erkaeltung.

Unfortunately I could not write earlier, I had a cold. Yes, really, here are over 30 degree (Celsius) and I get a cold.

Samstag der 26.7.2008 war ein beeindruckender Tag.

Saturday, 7.26.2008, this was an impressive day.

Wir, die IBA, gingen zur Hankuk Kiwon (Korean Baduk Association).

We, the IBA, went to the Hankuk Kiwon (Korean Baduk Association).

Der erste Eindruck war etwas enttaeuschend. Ich hatte es mir etwas imposanter vorgestellt, vielleicht etwas Marmor, es war alles in allem sehr schlicht.

The first impression was a bit underwhelming. I thought it would be a little more imposing, maybe some marble. Everything was quite plain.

Professor Lee Ki Bong zeigte uns das Gebauede sehr genau und jeder dort scheint ihn zu kennen. Wir sahen auch Yonguseng (Inseis) spielen.

Professor Lee Ki Bong showed us the building and everyone there seems to know him. This was very interesting. We even saw yonguseng (Inseis) playing.

Im selben Gebaeude befindet sich auch das Studio von Baduk TV.

Ruhe, bitte! Profis sind gerade am Spielen. Wie man vermuten kann, ist das der Raum wovon die Spiele uebertragen werden.

Haha, 🙂 Oscar und ich beim Demobrett. Bei einer Uebertragung ist hier immer ein Profi, welcher Kommentare zum Spiel gibt.  Neben ihm ist dann eine huebsche Dame, welche ihm 20 Kyu Fragen stellt. 😉

In der Hankuk Kiwon gibt es auch eine Buechergeschaeft. Es ist wahnsinn, das ganze Material ist hier so billig. Habe dort ein paar Buecher gekauft. Die meisten kosten so um die 8000 Won,  also ca. 5 Euro. In Europa muss man 4 mal mehr dafuer bezahlen!

You also can find a book store in the Hankuk Kiwon. It is amazing, all the stuff is so cheap. I bought some books. The custom price is 8000 Won, about 5 Euro. 4 times cheaper than in Europe!

Der Raum war voll mit Top-Profi Spielern! Wir beobachteten mit ihnen zusammen das Spiel, diskutierten, sie zeigten uns Variationen, es war so genial!

Anfangs machte es einen recht unscheinbaren Eindruck.

At the beginning it looked very plain.

Dann kamen ploetzlich Wachen in traditionellen Kostuemen heraus und weckten unser Interesse.

Der Eintritt fuer 18 Jaehrige betraegt 3000 Won, also um die 2 Euro. Wir erwarteten nicht viel. Vielleicht drei bis vier Gebauede, doch wir wurden einem besseren belehrt. 😀

The entry fee was 3000 Won, about 2 Euro. We didn’t expect much, maybe three of four buildings, but Gyeongbokgung taught us something better.

Wir waren sehr ueberrascht und beeindruckt, es war sehr ruhig und auch nicht ueberfuellt. Falls ihr mal zufaellig in Korea seid, schaut es euch an! 😉

We were very surprised and impressed, it was quiet and there were not too many people. Visit this place, if you happen to be in Korea.

Das war besonders witzig, die Tierkreiszeichen in Stein als Ritter. xD Ich bin ein Hase.

Schon frueh machte die Kamera des Franzosen schlapp, mein Akku funktionierte genau bis zum Ende, nettes Timing. 🙂

Exploring Seoul – 2nd

Wir konnten natuerlich nicht widerstehen und gingen hinein.

It is self-evident, we couldn’t resit entering. 

Vorallem aeltere Menschen scheinen diesen Platz zu nutzen um sich zu treffen und um sich etwas zu entspannen.

Especially older people seem to use this place to meet each other and to relax.

Im naechsten Post zeige ich euch Bilder von Gyeongbokgung, darauf koennt ihr schon gespannt sein.

In der Akademie passieren in letzter Zeit komische Sachen. Oscar hat nun viele Partien mit einem halben Punkt verloren, darunter 2 gegen mich. xD In einem Ligaspiel mit 0,5 Punkten Komi, schafften es Oscar und Nadav ein Unterschieden zu spielen, aufgrund eines Triple Ko. Fuer nicht Go-Spieler, dies ist etwas sehr seltenes. (Siehe: Triple Ko)

Lately strange things occur in the IBA. Oscar is losing many games with half point (2 games against me). xD In a league game with 0,5 Komi Oscar and Nadav made it possible to play jigo/tie, because of a triple ko. For Non-Go-player, it is something very special and rare. (See: Triple Ko)

Seit gestern bin ich nun B-League-Champion. Mit 5 Siegen und 3 Niederlagen konnte ich die woechentliche Liga fuer mich entscheiden. Der Sieger war bis zum letzten Spiel unklar. Mehmet und ich mussten noch eine Partie gegeneinander spielen und wir standen beide gleich auf. Im vorherigen Spiel gegen ihm machte ich ein paar Fehler und er konnte mich relativ leicht besiegen, ich war also auf der Hut. Das Spiel war lange sehr ausgeglichen, aber ich hatte am Ende mehr Ausdauer als er und gewann das Spiel und somit die Liga.

Erster Dan ich komme! 🙂

 

Since yesterday I am the B-League-Champion. I won the league with a score of 5 wins and 3 losses. The winner of the league was until the very end unclear. Mehmet and me had the same score and we had to play against each other, the winner of the match will be the champion. In a previous game against him, we won fairly easy, due to stupid mistakes of mine. I was on guard. For a long time the game was pretty balanced, however I had more stamina in the end and won the game and the league.

First Dan I am coming! 🙂

Exploring Seoul – 1st

Gestern haben Jonathan, Oscar (3dan aus Spanien, aeh Katalonien, sorry 🙂 ) und ich Seoul erkundschaftet.

Yesterday Jonathan, Oscar (3dan from Spain, err Catalonia, sorry 🙂 ) and me explored Seoul.

Die Sonne schien und gluecklicherweise war es nicht zu heiss. Mit der Metro fuhren wir nach Insa-dong, was ein beruehmtes Viertel in Seoul ist. Hier gibt es zahlreiche Geschaeften fuer Touristen, diverse Tempelanlagen, aber im Kontrast dazu auch moderne Architektur, Hochhaueser auf denen uebergrosse Flachbildschirme fuer Produkte aller Art werben.

The sun was shining and fortunately it wasn’t too hot. We took the Metro to Insa-dong, which is a famous part of Seoul. There are many shops for tourists, several temples, but in contrast you can find modern architecture, skyscrapers with huge flat screens on top.

Ja, die Leute haben Regenschirme, aber nicht weils regnet, sondern gegen die Sonne. Man sieht auch oft aeltere Damen mit ueberdimensionalen Baseball Cappys; damit wollen sie ihre Haut hell halten und auch schuetzen vor UV-Strahlen. Sieht jedoch etwas komisch aus. 🙂

Yes, although it is not raining, many people are using umbrellas to protect themselves against the sun rays. You can see that old women are also wearing oversized baseball caps, they want to keep their skin light and they also fear UV rays.

Out of Seoul

Letzt habe ich mit Min einen kleinen Trip unternommen. Wir sind nach Cheonan gefahren, welches eine Stunde mit dem Expressbus von Seoul entfernt ist. Das ist auch eine richtige Grossstadt, mit zahlreichen Kaufhaeusern, Wolkenkratzern und alles was sonst noch dazu gehoert.

Recently I went sightseeing with Min. We drove to Cheonan, it is one hour by express-bus away from Seoul. Cheonan is a metropolis too, with many department stores, skyscrapers…

Hier in Korea ist es seit ein paar Tagen extrem heiss und schwuel -> Klimaanlagen sind ein Muss. (Gott sei Dank hatte der Bus eine Klimaanlage 😉 )

Since a few days the weather is extremely hot and humid -> air-conditions are a standard. (Thank God, the bus had air-condition ;))

Zum Mittagessen gab es Naengmyeon, eine Suppe mit kalten Nudeln (darin findet man wirklich Eisbrocken), und Mandu (Vergleichbar mit Maultaschen, welche eine Fuellung haben aus Tofu und Gemuese). Beides sehr zu empfehlen. 🙂

To lunch we ate naengmyeon, it’s a soup with cold noodles (they put really ice into it), and mandu (similar to pasta squares, the filling was tofu and vegetables). I recommend both highly. 🙂

Leider hatte ich im Restaurant nicht meine Kamera dabei, aber ich werde bei Gelegenheit versuchen, Fotos von den Gerichten nachzureichen, ansonsten hilft vielleicht Google.

Unfortunately I didn’t took my camera with me to the restaurant, but on another occasion I will put up some photos of these dishes, nevertheless also Google can help.

In Cheonan haben wir das Independence Memorial Hall besucht. In der Vergangenheit wurde Korea mehrmals zum Opfer seiner Nachbarn. Oft wurde es invadiert und im 20. Jahrhundert war es nicht gerade freiwillig ein Kolonie von Japan.  Es ist eine Art Museum, das vorallem den Menschen gewidment ist, welche im Kampf um Freiheit und Unabhaenigkeit ihr Leben lassen mussten. Es gibt zahlreiche Zitate und Monumente, welche unter anderem auch den Wunsch zeigen, dass Korea in der Zukunft wieder vereint sein will.

In Cheonan we visited the Independence Memorial Hall. In the past Korea became oftently a victim of his neighbours. It had to deal against many foreign invasions and was also forced to become a colony of Japan. It is a museum dedicated for the people who died in the struggle for freedom and independence. There are numerous quotes and monuments, which also show the wish of an united Korea.

Hier zeigt Min, was das Monument darstellen soll: Zwei erhobene Arme. Dazu muss man wissen, dass der Anfang der Unabhaengigkeitsbewegungen sehr friedlich waren. Die Menschen erhoben lediglich ihre Arme und sagten Nein zur Unterdrueckung.

Here Min shows us the meaning of the monument: two raised arms. The beginning of the independence movements were very peaceful. The people just raised their arms to the air and said no to the suppression.

Zum Abschluss haben wir noch mein neustes Lieblingsdessert gegessen, Pat-bing-su. Woertlich uebersetzt bedeutet es Rote-Bohnen-Eis. Lasst euch von den roten Bohnen nicht abschrecken! Es ist super. Rote Bohnen, viele klein geschnittene Fruechte, kleine Stuecke von suessem Reiskuchen und crushed Eis. Genial! Ich sollte es in Deutschland vermarkten, das waere der Hit. 🙂

In the end we ate my new favorite dessert, Pat-bing-su. If you translate it word-by-word, it means: red-bean-ice. Don’t worry, red beans are good! It is great. Red beans, many small pieces of fruits, some small pieces of rice cake and fine crushed ice. Awesome! I should export it back to Germany, it would make me rich. 🙂

New students, new teacher and a new rank: I Am First Kyu!

So vieles hat sich getan in der IBA.

Drei neue Students, eine neue Lehrerin und ich darf mich nun offiziell erster Kyu nennen.

Viktor, ein Freund von mir aus Oesterreich, ist seit circa einer Woche hier. Er ist 4dan und spielt mit einem sehr gutem Stil. In der letzten Ice-cream neki (neki, korean. fuer Wette; ein kleines, kurzes IBA internes Go Turnier um Eis) hat er gezeigt, dass er im Moment der staerkste Student in der Akademie ist. Ja, wir spielen um Ice-cream! Haha 🙂 .

Matt, mein ehemaliger Zimmergenosse, hat uns leider verlassen und ist nun in Japan. Doch seit 1. Juli bin ich wieder zu zweit im Zimmer. Die Stube teile ich jetzt mit Jonathan, 2kyu Frankreich.

Last but not least, Chiyong ist nun auch mit im IBA Boot. Sie ist Yonguseng (Def. siehe im vorherigen Post) und wird nun mit uns studieren um Profispielerin zu werden.

Seit ein oder zwei Wochen haben wir in der IBA eine neue Lehrerin: Lee So-Yong 7dan. Auch eine ehemalige Yonguseng und sie hat es bis in die erste Klasse geschafft (Info: die erste Klasse ist die hoechste). Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt und studiert im Moment an der Myongji Universitaet.
Dienstag und Donnerstag kommt sie zur IBA und unterrichtet uns.

Wenn ich solche Lehrerinnen in meiner Schulzeit gehabt haette, haette ich mich mehr angestrengt. 😉 Nach vielen Partien gegen die Mitglieder der IBA war So-Yong lange ungeschlagen. Ich moechte nicht angeben, aber heute war ich der erste, der ihre Siegesreihe unterbrechen konnte.

Achja fast vergessen, ich habe die Juni Liga gewonnen! Dies und Lee So Yong’s Lob ueber meine Partie hatten zur Folge, dass ich mich nun erster Kyu schimpfen darf. Hell yeah! Ich freu mich auf die groesseren Herausforderungen.

So, many things happened.

Three new students, a new teacher and I am officially allowed to call myself „First Kyu“.

Since about a  week Viktor, a Austrian friend of mine, is here in the IBA. He is 4dan and has a very calm and good style. In the last ice-cream neki (neki = bet, a small tournament for ice-cream) Viktor proved that he is probably the best player in the academy. Yes, we gamble with ice-cream. Haha :).

Matt, my former roommate, left the IBA and is now in Japan. However since the first of July I share my room with Jonathan, a French 2kyu.

Last, but not least, Chiyong is a new IBA member. She is a yonguseng (For the definition, look in the post below). Chiyong is studying with us to become a professional go player.

Since a couple of weeks, there is a new teacher in the IBA: Lee So-yong 7dan. She is a former yonguseng and made it to the first class (the highest). So-yong is 20 years old and currently a student of the Myongji university.

She teaches us every Tuesday and Thursday.

If I had teachers like this in my former school, I would have been a better student. 😀 After numerous games against the other members of the IBA, So-yong was still undefeated. I don’t want to brag, I was the first who could beat her, and so her winning streak ended.

Ah, I almost forgot, I won the June League! Because of this success and So-Yong’s praise for my game, I am now officially „First Kyu“. Hell yeah, I am eager for new challenges! Bring it on!
