In the Hankuk Kiwon

Konnte leider nicht frueher was schreiben, ich hatte eine Erkaeltung. Ja wirklich, es sind hier ueber 30 Grad und ich bekomm eine Erkaeltung.

Unfortunately I could not write earlier, I had a cold. Yes, really, here are over 30 degree (Celsius) and I get a cold.

Samstag der 26.7.2008 war ein beeindruckender Tag.

Saturday, 7.26.2008, this was an impressive day.

Wir, die IBA, gingen zur Hankuk Kiwon (Korean Baduk Association).

We, the IBA, went to the Hankuk Kiwon (Korean Baduk Association).

Der erste Eindruck war etwas enttaeuschend. Ich hatte es mir etwas imposanter vorgestellt, vielleicht etwas Marmor, es war alles in allem sehr schlicht.

The first impression was a bit underwhelming. I thought it would be a little more imposing, maybe some marble. Everything was quite plain.

Professor Lee Ki Bong zeigte uns das Gebauede sehr genau und jeder dort scheint ihn zu kennen. Wir sahen auch Yonguseng (Inseis) spielen.

Professor Lee Ki Bong showed us the building and everyone there seems to know him. This was very interesting. We even saw yonguseng (Inseis) playing.

Im selben Gebaeude befindet sich auch das Studio von Baduk TV.

In the same building is also the studio of Baduk TV.

Ruhe, bitte! Profis sind gerade am Spielen. Wie man vermuten kann, ist das der Raum wovon die Spiele uebertragen werden.

Silence, please! Professionals are playing. This is the place, where the broad-casted games were held.

Haha, Oscar und ich beim Demobrett. Bei einer Uebertragung ist hier immer ein Profi, welcher Kommentare zum Spiel gibt.  Neben ihm ist dann eine huebsche Dame, welche ihm 20 Kyu Fragen stellt.

In der Hankuk Kiwon gibt es auch eine Buechergeschaeft. Es ist wahnsinn, das ganze Material ist hier so billig. Habe dort ein paar Buecher gekauft. Die meisten kosten so um die 8000 Won,  also ca. 5 Euro. In Europa muss man 4 mal mehr dafuer bezahlen!

You also can find a book store in the Hankuk Kiwon. It is amazing, all the stuff is so cheap. I bought some books. The custom price is 8000 Won, about 5 Euro. 4 times cheaper than in Europe!

Der Raum war voll mit Top-Profi Spielern! Wir beobachteten mit ihnen zusammen das Spiel, diskutierten, sie zeigten uns Variationen, es war so genial!

The room was full of top-professionals! We discussed the game together, they showed us some variations, it was so awesome!

Wir konnten natuerlich nicht widerstehen und gingen hinein.

It is self-evident, we couldn’t resit entering. 

Vorallem aeltere Menschen scheinen diesen Platz zu nutzen um sich zu treffen und um sich etwas zu entspannen.

Especially older people seem to use this place to meet each other and to relax.

In der Akademie passieren in letzter Zeit komische Sachen. Oscar hat nun viele Partien mit einem halben Punkt verloren, darunter 2 gegen mich. xD In einem Ligaspiel mit 0,5 Punkten Komi, schafften es Oscar und Nadav ein Unterschieden zu spielen, aufgrund eines Triple Ko. Fuer nicht Go-Spieler, dies ist etwas sehr seltenes. (Siehe: Triple Ko)

Lately strange things occur in the IBA. Oscar is losing many games with half point (2 games against me). xD In a league game with 0,5 Komi Oscar and Nadav made it possible to play jigo/tie, because of a triple ko. For Non-Go-player, it is something very special and rare. (See: Triple Ko)

Seit gestern bin ich nun B-League-Champion. Mit 5 Siegen und 3 Niederlagen konnte ich die woechentliche Liga fuer mich entscheiden. Der Sieger war bis zum letzten Spiel unklar. Mehmet und ich mussten noch eine Partie gegeneinander spielen und wir standen beide gleich auf. Im vorherigen Spiel gegen ihm machte ich ein paar Fehler und er konnte mich relativ leicht besiegen, ich war also auf der Hut. Das Spiel war lange sehr ausgeglichen, aber ich hatte am Ende mehr Ausdauer als er und gewann das Spiel und somit die Liga.

Erster Dan ich komme!

 

Since yesterday I am the B-League-Champion. I won the league with a score of 5 wins and 3 losses. The winner of the league was until the very end unclear. Mehmet and me had the same score and we had to play against each other, the winner of the match will be the champion. In a previous game against him, we won fairly easy, due to stupid mistakes of mine. I was on guard. For a long time the game was pretty balanced, however I had more stamina in the end and won the game and the league.

New students, new teacher and a new rank: I Am First Kyu!

So vieles hat sich getan in der IBA.

Drei neue Students, eine neue Lehrerin und ich darf mich nun offiziell erster Kyu nennen.

Viktor, ein Freund von mir aus Oesterreich, ist seit circa einer Woche hier. Er ist 4dan und spielt mit einem sehr gutem Stil. In der letzten Ice-cream neki (neki, korean. fuer Wette; ein kleines, kurzes IBA internes Go Turnier um Eis) hat er gezeigt, dass er im Moment der staerkste Student in der Akademie ist. Ja, wir spielen um Ice-cream! Haha .

Matt, mein ehemaliger Zimmergenosse, hat uns leider verlassen und ist nun in Japan. Doch seit 1. Juli bin ich wieder zu zweit im Zimmer. Die Stube teile ich jetzt mit Jonathan, 2kyu Frankreich.

Last but not least, Chiyong ist nun auch mit im IBA Boot. Sie ist Yonguseng (Def. siehe im vorherigen Post) und wird nun mit uns studieren um Profispielerin zu werden.

Seit ein oder zwei Wochen haben wir in der IBA eine neue Lehrerin: Lee So-Yong 7dan. Auch eine ehemalige Yonguseng und sie hat es bis in die erste Klasse geschafft (Info: die erste Klasse ist die hoechste). Sie ist zwanzig Jahre alt und studiert im Moment an der Myongji Universitaet.
Dienstag und Donnerstag kommt sie zur IBA und unterrichtet uns.

Wenn ich solche Lehrerinnen in meiner Schulzeit gehabt haette, haette ich mich mehr angestrengt. Nach vielen Partien gegen die Mitglieder der IBA war So-Yong lange ungeschlagen. Ich moechte nicht angeben, aber heute war ich der erste, der ihre Siegesreihe unterbrechen konnte.

Achja fast vergessen, ich habe die Juni Liga gewonnen! Dies und Lee So Yong’s Lob ueber meine Partie hatten zur Folge, dass ich mich nun erster Kyu schimpfen darf. Hell yeah! Ich freu mich auf die groesseren Herausforderungen.

So, many things happened.

Three new students, a new teacher and I am officially allowed to call myself „First Kyu“.

Since about a  week Viktor, a Austrian friend of mine, is here in the IBA. He is 4dan and has a very calm and good style. In the last ice-cream neki (neki = bet, a small tournament for ice-cream) Viktor proved that he is probably the best player in the academy. Yes, we gamble with ice-cream. Haha .

Matt, my former roommate, left the IBA and is now in Japan. However since the first of July I share my room with Jonathan, a French 2kyu.

Last, but not least, Chiyong is a new IBA member. She is a yonguseng (For the definition, look in the post below). Chiyong is studying with us to become a professional go player.

Since a couple of weeks, there is a new teacher in the IBA: Lee So-yong 7dan. She is a former yonguseng and made it to the first class (the highest). So-yong is 20 years old and currently a student of the Myongji university.

She teaches us every Tuesday and Thursday.

If I had teachers like this in my former school, I would have been a better student. After numerous games against the other members of the IBA, So-yong was still undefeated. I don’t want to brag, I was the first who could beat her, and so her winning streak ended.

Ah, I almost forgot, I won the June League! Because of this success and So-Yong’s praise for my game, I am now officially „First Kyu“. Hell yeah, I am eager for new challenges! Bring it on!

9p in the IBA

Vor ein paar Tagen traf sich der Fanclub von Diana Koszegi, einer ungarischen Profispielern 1p, in der IBA.

A few days ago the fanclub of Diana Koszegi, Hungarian professional player 1p, held a meeting in the IBA.

Unter zahlreichen Amateurspielern befand sich auch ein 9dan Profispieler: Kim Sung Jun. (links im unterem Bild)

Beside numerous amateur players there was also a 9dan professional player: Kim Sung Jun. (left in the picture below.)

Die beiden Profis spielten abwechselnd Simultanpartien gegen die Amateurspieler.

Both pro-players played against the amateurs simultaneously.

Ein paar meiner Kollegen.

Hier spiele ich (schwarz) gerade gegen Matt (weiss).

Der Spieler in der Mitte ist Kim Jung Hyeop, ein sehr starker Spieler. Er ist ein ehemaliger Yonguseng (koranischer Insei, was bedeutet, dass er auf einer Schule war fuer angehende Profis). Demnaechst fliegt er nach Belgien um dort Go zu lehren und anschliessend nimmt er am EM Go Kongress in Schweden teil.

The player in the middle is Kim Jung Hyeop, a very strong player. He is a former yonguseng (Korean insei, which means, he attended a certain go school and tried to become a professional player), he will fly to Belgium in order to teach Go and later on he will visit the European Go Congress in Sweden.

Ich spielte auch gegen Diana eine Blitzpartie. Dannach sagte sie, dass sie von einigen meiner Zuege sehr ueberrascht war (im positivem Sinne)

I also played a lightning game against Diana. After the game she said, that she was very surprised by some of my moves (in a positive way). :D

Die Zeit vergeht hier rasend schnell.

Im Moment opfere ich etwas Zeit um euch meinen aktuellen Alltag und die IBA vorzustellen.

Ich wohne mit Alexa, einer sehr netten Ungarin, in einer bescheidenen Unterkunft. Klein, nicht unbedingt luxuriős, aber funktional optimal. Vielleicht werd ich davon auch mal ein paar Fotos posten. Koreanische „Betten“ muss ich euch unbedingt mal zeigen und auch die Duschen! haha… Heute wird űbrigens ein neuer Schűler ankommen und ebenfalls hier wohnen.

Um circa 11 Uhr machen wir uns morgens auf den Weg zur IBA. Nach 5 Minuten und im 5. Stock sind wir am Ziel.

Die International Baduk Academy.

Baduk ist űbrigens das koreanische Wort fűr Go.

Auf der IBA sind unter der Woche vier reguläre Spieler: Alexa, Matt (USA), Tony (Kanada) und ich.

Go Studenten aus der Myongji Universität kommen meistens am Wochenende.

Dort lősen wir Go Probleme, spielen Partien, machen Lehrpartien usw.

Zur Veranschaulichung: Daran sitze ich, schwarz am Zug.

Die Probleme sind lősbar, aber nicht so einfach und auch manchmal ziemlich tricky. 150 Probleme hab ich bis jetzt geknackt.

Etwas komisch ist jedoch schon…

dass auf dem Cover Kinder abgebildet sind.

Dort sind wir dann bis ca. 11-12 Uhr. Dazwischen gehen wir natűrlich Essen und ab und zu wird auch etwas Billiard oder Tischtennis gespielt. Professor Lee Ki-bong ist nicht nur gut in Go, sondern auch ein Ass im Tischtennis.

In der IBA gibt es auch eine Liga. Heute habe ich zwei Liga-Partien gespielt. Gegen Tony (1kyu) habe ich sehr unglűcklich verloren. Der Sieg war mehr als in greifbarer Nähe…

Mit 4 Steinen Vorgabe habe ich gegen Alexa (3dan) gespielt und nach einem „nervenzerfetzenden“ ( ) Spiel gewonnen.

Heute ist ausserdem noch eine Geburtstagsfeier von Professor Lee Ki-bong. Da werden viele Leute kommen und ein paar werden auch hier in der Unterkunft schlafen, das wird dann wohl ziemlich voll hier, aber mit Sicherheit spassig!

Time really flies here.

Now I will tell you more about my everyday life and the IBA.

I am living with Alexa, a very nice person from Hungary, in a plain and simple accommodation. It’s small, not really luxurious, but in fulfilling it’s function, it’s perfect. Maybe I am going to post some pictures of the accomodation. However, I have to show you Korean „beds“ and the showers. haha… Today a new student will arrive, who also will sleep at the accommodation.

Usually at 11:00 am we are going to the IBA, after 5 minutes and on the fifth floor we arrived at our destination: the International Baduk Academy.

Baduk is the Korean term for Go.

At the IBA there are currently four regular students: Alexa, Matt (USA), Tony (Canada), and me.

Go students from the Myongji university are visting us on weekends.

Than we solve problems, play games, do teaching games and so on.

As a way of visualisation: Here a problem, it’s black’s turn.

The problems are solveable, however not that easy and sometimes pretty tricky.

I solved about 150 so far.

It’s a bit strange,

… that there are kids on the cover of the book.

That’s where we stay until 11:00 or 12:00 pm. Of course in between we are going to eat and sometimes we play some billiard or tabletennis. Professor Lee Ki-bong is not only good at Go, but also an ace on tabletennis.

There is also a league at the IBA. Today I played two league games. I lost pretty unfortunately against Tony (1kyu). I could have won it…

I played against Alexa (3dan) with 4 handicap stones, and after some tough battles I won.

There will be a birthday party for Professor Lee Ki-bong. Lots of people will come and also some will sleep at our accommodation. It will get pretty crowded, but definitley funny.
